Upholstery, heater routing, and adding some fuel!

5/12/2021

- started to add upholstery
- rear golf cubby hole as a test for carpets
- center console leather
- rear passenger heat routing
- bled brake lines
- filled the fuel tanks!

I’d recommend Wurx Containers.. saw them on Trent Palmer’s channel and he even has a discount code. 👍

Muffler Brackets, Front Cover Work and WindSheild Placement

10/8/2020

I am working to finish up the firewall forward electrical and any final placement of the wires that will be covered once I put the front fiberglass piece on.
I had to reroute some of the heater ducting and also remembered to attach the heater control cable.
I also routed the brake line through the firewall forward gromet.

One thing to note, and I've heard about this from another builder, the bottom muffler bracket that mounts over the muffler shroud is a manufactured incorrectly - it's a bit too big.

The fix is to shave off some of the metal where the bolt joins them, maybe a quarter inch total. It didn't take too long with a grinder and it fit just fine afterwards.

A Week of Touch Ups and Quick Wins

5/22/2020

This week I focused on fixing things I made mistakes on or that were quick and easy.
  • During my move, I put in both the seats and tested them out.. only to see that I reversed one of the handles.. oops. I de-riveted the seat lock and turned the handle the right way - facing down.
  • I put the bottom skin on to cover up the landing gear slot.
  • Match drilled, countersunk and applied Sikaflex 295UV to the NACA ducts and installed those.
    • I did have to shorten one rivet due to it hitting the molded NACA duct, shown below
  • I ran the ducting from the heater to the vents, which is a bit of a pain with the ducting that is provided. I heard that SCEET tubing is better, which I'll look into for the future.
  • I did have to replace the zip ties provided with hose clamps since I couldn't get the zip ties to get a good grip.
  • I finally got around to linking the aileron control sticks together, which was not easy - wish I had a set of smaller hands to get things together in there. Not looking forward to connecting the autopilot and aileron control rods...
  • Now that I have my fancy laser etched throttle quadrant, I went ahead and put that together.. looks so good!
  • I ran the brake line, which should have been a relatively straight forward exercise, but the brake line is so inflexible, every turn was a challenge.
    • I had to cut a notch out of the top of the landing gear to allow for a smoother bending angle, otherwise it would have kinked.
    • Once the lines were in place, the connections were pretty straight forward to put together, despite the lack of instructions from the factory. ;-)
  • I was able to shave down the nose gear bushings and make that butter smooth to turn, so I went ahead and connected the rudder pedals.
    • During the process, I realized that the eye bolt had the wrong direction thread, so I had to switch that out.
  • Since I have all my avionics gear, I went ahead and mounted the ELT on one of the right ribs under the back seat.
    • I did have to drill 2 holes to get at least 4 bolts in as I've seen other builders do.

Phew! That was a lot.. looking forward to moving on to digging into the avionics a bit more next week!
